GEOMECHANICAL ASSESSMENT OF ROCKS UNDER MINING IN THE PERIOD OF AN EARTHQUAKE AT KAZ DEPOSIT

The paper gives geological, technical and geomechanical characteristic of Kaz deposit. Parameters of extraction blocks and their extraction sequence are determined. Strains of rock mass are assessed based on measurements taken using deep-seated plugs. Stability of exposed surfaces is estimated using values of critical stresses. The found safety factors imply that the undermined strata are stable. The authors have analyzed geodynamics of rock mass in the periods of large-scale blasting and earthquakes. Damaged rock areas in underground excavations are located. It is found that a strong seismic event has taken place due to stress redistribution after a large-scale explosion and owing to counter advance of the mining front. The authors propose mining safety enhancement measures.
