COMPARATIVE ASSESSMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF DUMP TRUCKS AND DIESEL TROLLEY CARS IN OPEN PIT MINING

The article presents a comparative assessment of the environmental impact of dump trucks and diesel trolley cars operated in open pit mining. Motor transport is currently the main mode of transportation in deep open pit mines and the major pollutant of the environment. More than 120 diesel trolley cars, driven by diesel fuel and electricity, operate presently in the world. The data on hazardous emission of dump trucks and diesel trolley cars are reported. It is shown that sum of ratios of hazardous emission to their maximum allowable concentrations increases both for dump trucks and diesel trolley cars as mining is advanced to deeper levels though in case of diesel trolley cars, the total volume of hazardous emission is more than twice as little as in operation of dump trucks. According to the data on energy efficiency, diesel trolley cars also have a little better index. Economically, saving is only achievable in terms of operating cost of diesel fuel.
