MATERIAL CONSTITUTION OF OLD TAILINGS AT AKTYUZ PROCESSING PLANT

The study object is tailings stored at Aktyuz Processing Plant in four tailings ponds with a total volume of 10 Mt. Aktyuz Processing Plant has been dressing Kutessay deposit ore for 30 years. Due to low content of rare earth elements, fine dissemination of rare metals and technologies in use, extraction of valuable components makes 65–69% and the discharged tailings contain rare and rare earth metals. Aimed to analyze processing characteristics of tailings, technological samples were taken at tailings pond No. 2. The phase composition of rare earth-bearing tailings was determined using the methods of scanning electron microscopy and X-ray micro-analysis. According to the results, the most probable components in the analyzed tailings samples are the main minerals of rare earth elements—monazite (Ce,La…)[PO4], bastenzite (Сe,La,Pr)[CO3]F, loparite (Са, Ce, Na)(Ti, Nb) O3, isomorphous substitutes of rare earth elements, zircon ZrSiO4. Waste rock is represented by aluminosilicate, calcite, gypsum and quartz.
