TRANSPORT PASSAGE THROUGH WEST YAKUTIA

Economic development of a country is directly connected with the expansion of transportation infrastructure and logistics. Russia’s entering the processes of globalization suggests a heightened attention to be paid to transport passages for export–import shipping operations and international through routing. For the sustainable economic development of the Russian Arctic, it is required to evolve the arctic transport system to ensure reliable interlinking, normal living environment in the northern territories of Russia, advanced development of mineral deposits, export of oil and gas and expansion of through traffic. The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) holds an exceptional position in the economic geography and can become one of the basic hubs in the transport passage between the countries of Europe and Asia–Pacific. The transport infrastructure of the Republic satisfies, on the whole, the demand of cargo and passenger carriage. Recent years feature positive dynamics in these activities. Further development in the Republic is connected with the elimination of constraints due to the local transportation infrastructure. The key element in the expansion of the transportation infrastructure is the increase in capacity of the basic traffic arteries—Trans-Siberian and Baikal–Amur Mainlines which are to include Russia in the global through traffic of goods along the so-called Asia–Europe Land Bridge. It is anticipated to construct arteries of autoroads and, further on, railroads going through the whole territory of Yakutia and making ground for the Yakutia transport passage. The basic idea is to substantiate kimberlite mining as the foundation for the construction of the transport passage in West Yakutia.
