The article shows that the explosion hazard criterion of coal seams based on explosibility of coal dust is insufficiently justified. This criterion was assumed in the conditions of lack of reliable knowledge on the structure and chemistry of the organic part of coal seams. Determination of volatile yield from a coal sample 1 g in weight is described. The analysis procedure is presented for coal dust decomposition under heating and escape of carbon depending on total volatile yield from samples. The volatile yield is calculated by mass concentration of hydrogen, oxygen, ash and carbon atoms determined in coal mines of SUEK. It is found that as the volatile yield decreases, the mass of the coke residue in the test sample reduces. It is impossible to estimate explosion hazard of coal seams using the coal dust explosibility index determined based on the volatile yield as coal dust lies evenly on the bottom of muffle kiln rather than soars. The volatile yield can be the indicator of coal marketability as the volatile yield is reflective of the real weight content of carbon residue for the metallurgical application.
