Using expendable adaptable feeders made of reinforced concrete on-site (in face area) with regard to specific geological conditions is a relatively new approach. Such feeders are compared with the conventional feeders in this article. The drawbacks and obsolete engineering solutions of metal feeders are shown. The advantages of reinforced concrete feeders are illustrated. Advancement of adaptable piston feeders is described. The analysis used data on wages of miners. The costs of manufacture and installation were determined and compared for the feeders of both types. Finally, the reinforced concrete feeder is 5.6 times more efficient and advantageous that the conventional feeder. The reinforced concrete feeder is more efficient in inclined ore bodies under any conditions. The economic benefit, aside from reduced ore loss and dilution, is obtained owing to the essential cost saving in heading as openings have smaller cross-sections. The other ideas on betterment of the reinforced concrete feeders are equipment with semiconductor sensors, gradual transition from small to large discharge opening; managerial features and methods of profit return increase. It is worthy of mentioning that no reinforced concrete feeders of foreign manufacture have been revealed. The introduction of the reinforced concrete feeders in mining practice will produce considerable effect both in terms of economy, business image and innovation.
