CARBON BUDGET ASSESSMENT IN RECLAIMED LANDS IN THE FAR EAST FEDERAL DISTRICT

Under global climate change on the planet, it is necessary to study ecological potential both of natural forests and man-made planting. This article offers calculated results on carbon balance of reclaimed lands in man-made forests under control in the Far East Federal District, including Far-East taiga and Amur–Primorye mixed coniferous–broad leaved forest. This problem remains unstudied, and, for this reason, this article aims to assess ecological potential of reclaimed lands after mineral mining using the assessment procedure of regional carbon budget of forests (RCBF). Based on this aim, the formulated objectives include: (1) Collection, analysis and generalization of relevant information; (2) Calculation of ecological potential of reclaimed lands by RCBF procedure; (3) Assessment of carbon budget of man-made reclamation forest planting. The research has found a more than 2 times increment in the carbon budget of planting on reclaimed lands after earlier mineral mining as against unreclaimed areas (in terms of Solnechny and Dalnegorsky Mining and Processing Plants, as well as closed Kerbinsky mine, etc.). It is concluded that in order to increase carbon reserves, the mining-disturbed lands should be reclaimed by planting and then passed to the forest fund.
