EXTERNAL DUMP STABILITY SUBSTANTIATION AND MONITORING IN KUZBASS

Dumping problems in open pit coal mining are discussed. The dump stability factors are analyzed, and Kuzbass dumps are characterized in general. It is shown that dumps are man-made bodies of large area, height and capacity. The investigations into engineering geology and hydrogeology of dumps, dumping technologies and monitoring are reviewed. It is found that strength and filtration characteristics of dumped rocks change with increasing height of dumps due to higher dispersiveness of rocks with disintegration of debris. Higher dispersiveness results in reduced volume of pore space and lower permeability of rocks and, as a consequence, in formation of a water-bearing bed in a dump. The water-bearing beds are typically present in dumps higher than 100 m in mining coal deposits adjacent to the Kolchugino group, or when clayey overburden and hard rock debris from both Kolchugino and Balakhon groups are dumped jointly. Hydrodynamic processes have considerable effect on the slope stability of dumps. The proposed methodology of dump safety monitoring includes surveying and hydrological instrumental observations, hydro-geomechanical calculations and numerical modeling of stresses and strains in rocks. Safety monitoring is carried out based on the preliminary substantiated criteria. The automatic safety monitoring system is based on water pressure measurements in dumps.
