MATERIAL CONSTITUTION CHARACTERISTICS GOVERNING PROCESSIBILITY OF CORUNDUM ORE

The information on the material constitution of corundum ore from the deposits Khit Island, Karelia, and Snezhnoe (Tajikistan) is given. The Khit Island corundum, which is the most productive corundum occurrence in Karelia (other occurrences are Varats, Dyadina Gora, etc.), of pink, crimson and violet red color, encloses collection-quality crystals in quantity of up to 5–7%. Corundum content of rocks is inconsistent. Corundum is, as a rule, heavily jointed. Vast majority of the Khit Island corundum crystals contain mineral pockets mostly of garnet, plagioclase, rutile, ilmenite zircon. The commercial mineralization of the Snezhnoe deposit is connected with marble and mica. The technological mineralogy data are presented for two genetic types of corundum ore—metamorphogene rocks and hydrothermal skarn-laid marble. An important problem of the present time is development of efficient and ecology-friendly dressing technologies using optical sorting methods. Mechanisms of operation of optical separators are described. In the processibility analysis of the Khit Island and Snezhnoe corundum ore, structural features of rocks and physico-mechanical properties of minerals are investigated. The corundum ranges are determined in the commonly used color spaces RGB, Yuv and HLS, and their applicability in optical sorting is defined. It is shown that complex processing of the Khit Island ore is possible with innovative and environmentally sound methods. The highest production data are expected in processing circuit including ground ore classification, magnetic separation and optical sorting.
