One of the cheapest sources of energy in the global fuel and energy sector is coal; coaldriven power generation makes 40%. Nevertheless, oscillations in coal price are closely connected with price variation of prime hydrocarbons (first of all, gas). Being in high market demand, high-performance anthracite, dry-burning, long-flame and gas coals occur mostly in the Kuznetsk coal basin. These ranks of coal experienced long-term high-intensity metamophization, and their formation took place in the conditions of considerable tectonic activity, which resulted in dislocations and folding. Mining of steeply dipping coal seams is geologically complicated (reduced thickness of coal seams, numerous dirt bands, increased thickness of overburden). This article discusses problems of mining steeply dipping thin and complex-structure coal seams holding 30–35% of reserves. The volumes and quality indexes of coal mining are analyzed with regard to different rates of increase in open pit mining depth. Base on the analysis, it is found how coal mining intensity influences volume of marketable production, ash content of coal product and average stripping ratio per industry, including dumps. Introduction of a processing plant in selective and bulk mining processes is addressed. Benefits, limitations and feasibility of internal dumping, increased haulage distance and sound use of land areas are exposed. A case study of open pit mining is presented.
