Some economic aspects of safety in a coal mine are discussed. It is advisable to rationally distribute occupational safety assets to maintain the tolerable production risk level. In this case, the production risk management is based on the detection and control of hazardous production situation and on the determination of efficient treatment (shut-out, elimination, control). In case of a hazardous production situation, it should be promptly identified with decision making on either continuous monitoring of the situation in order to eliminate accident (injury), or on immediate elimination. The final decision on the treatment scenario for a hazardous production situation is made based on the cost estimate of the required measures. The selection of this final scenario should be supported by the available financial and other resources to avoid overrun of the production safety budget. Thus, inclusion of economy in detection and elimination of hazardous production situations allows reducing production risk by means of more efficient use of available resources and their rational distribution in specific production situations.
