GENERAL PROBLEMS OF GEOTECHNICAL RISK MANAGEMENT IN TERMS OF CONSTRUCTION OF VERTICAL SHAFTS IN THE MOSCOW SUBWAY

Underground construction in megacities is always associated with risk. Potentiality of risk elimination is to be discussed at all stages of planning and design, together with safety, efficiency and reliability of selected engineering solutions. Construction of subway objects often stumbles on problems which result in the increased period and cost of construction, and, sometimes, in accidents. These problems are conditioned by insufficient concern of construction participants with geotechnical risk management. The prompt and correct risk assessment in many ways governs duration of construction of subway objects. Efficiency of such assessment directly depends on the quality of risk identification by experts, on understanding of the accident mechanism and on the further analysis of the obtained information. In this article, the geotechnical risk identification is carried out in terms of construction of vertical subway shafts with specification of possible consequences. The cascade pattern of geotechnical risks is developed. The problems of risk management and their causes at different stages of subway construction are discussed, and the basic approaches to improvement of geotechnical risk management are outlined.
