Ratings of structural rock mass quality for Zarmitan gold mines

Popular foreign ratings of rock mass quality are tested in terms of the geological conditions of Zarmitan gold ore zone. The structural quality of rock mass is assessed using the approaches by Bieniawski (Rock Mass Rating—RMR), Barton (Method for Estimating Rock Mass Quality—Q-System) and Palmström (Rock Mass index—RMi) based on the geological and exploration reports obtained in Zarmitan gold ore zone for the main type of rocks—granosyenite. The strength estimates are presented for granosyenite in natural and water-saturated conditions; the structural quality is assessed in weakly, moderate and heavily fractured rock mass under moderate stresses. The estimation was carried out under rock mass stress state much lower than the ultimate compressive strength in natural condition of rock samples and in case of their water saturation; the stability periods of underground excavations are presented for different lengths of spans. The influence of the Geological Strength Index (GSI) on the stress–strain behavior of adjacent rocks of an underground opening is estimated, which allows designing openings at a sufficient strength criterion by Hoek–Brown. The rock mass quality was assessed for the major actual cross-section of permanent openings and development headings; the obtained information was used for support design with shotcreting and rock bolting.
