Blockchain-based digital platforms to reduce the carbon footprint of mining

This article reveals the problems of mining production on the way to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, suggests ways to solve them by using a digital platform approach. The necessity and speed of digitalization implementation at mining enterprises engaged in mining, processing and transportation of minerals are assessed. The dependence of electricity consumption and generation on the average ambient temperature has been studied. The tools that allow the enterprise to become more sustainable in the era of the fourth energy transition are analyzed: decarbonization of energy supply, due to the use of renewable energy sources; reduction in electricity consumption, as an effect of integrating demand management into the power supply system; electrification of mining transport and the development of charging infrastructure; purchase of green certificates and reengineering. Based on the conducted research, the application of blockchain technology is proposed for the integration of green certificates and released energy due to demand management. The experience of companies that currently use green technologies in production, or have such a plan in the strategy of further development, is offered. The concept of the structure of a multi-agent network platform based on blockchain technologies for responding to demand and managing the decarbonization of mining enterprises is presented.

Keywords: Demand response, digital platform, green certificates, peer-to-peer, blockchain, digital energy, digital technology, renewable energy sources.
