Ecologization of underground coal mining by means of ash use in backfill preparation

Minimization of ecological impacts of mineral mining and processing is possible through the use of waste materials as components in paste-type mixtures. The research comprises the analysis of processing plant waste, the justification of cement replacement in backfill by lignite fly ash and the effectiveness study of concrete structures in the conditions of methane concentration in gas/air mixture. It is experimentally found that the rate of methane release depends on the location of a coal face. By solving a gas dynamic problem, it is determined that in the mines on Donbass, the increase in the roof span in a range of 17–80 m is accompanied with a rise in methane concentration to 33% at a distance over 70 m. The details of using chemically activated tailings in preparation of backfill mixtures in ventilation flow control are given. It is found that leaching of metal-bearing manmade waste in disintegrators enhances metal recovery to 35%. The influence patterns of fly ash on backfill material parameters are revealed. The expediency of activation of fly ash to be used as a component in paste-type backfill is proved.
