Phytoremediation efficiency of Chamaenerion angustifolium in technogenically contaminated soils of the Far North

The development of phytoremediation methods for contaminated areas based on native plant species is one of the most urgent modern scientific and practical challenges. Monitoring studies of the soil cover in the Norilsk agglomeration have revealed exceedances of copper, nickel, lead, strontium, chromium and zinc concentrations above background levels. Chamaenerion angustifolium is proposed as a native phytoremediant. Its phytoremediation efficiency for the restoration of Far North soils contaminated with heavy metals has been investigated. Sampling was carried out at 12 sites, including residential, industrial and recreational zones. It was found that the species accumulates a number of these metals. The level of accumulation varies depending on the element form and the sampling point. The bioaccumulation factors for mobile forms of metals exceed unity, indicating active extraction of the bioavailable fraction, whereas the values for gross content are below unity, pointing to an excluder plant strategy. No signs of phytotoxicity (chlorosis, necrosis, growth inhibition and morphological anomalies) were detected; plants demonstrated normal development due to the presence of physiological barriers. The results substantiate the prospects of using Chamaenerion angustifolium for phytoremediation of technogenically contaminated soils in Arctic zones using the Norilsk industrial agglomeration as an example.
