Geological, ecological and resource-saving surveys of tailings storage facilities of Erdenet Mining Corporation

Tailings storage facilities—the man-made waste aggradations—are the objects featuring the largest volume and area, as well as the highest rate and time of the environmental impact. At the same time, they are a considerable source of resources for operating mining, processing and metallurgical plants. This article presents the geotechnical zoning results with identified zones suitable for the commercial development in the tailings storage area of Erdenet Mining Corporation. For these zones, a pre-treatment circuit is proposed (by hydraulic diameter of particles) with regard to the experience of jetting for separating particles larger than 0.07 mm at the waterworks in Moscow. For the zone beyond commercial interest due to low metal content of tailings, making 50% of the tailings storage area, it is suggested to remove dusting beaches by a suction dredge, with soil placement under water.

Keywords: man-made waste aggradations, hydraulic diameter of tailings particles, geotechnical zoning of tailings storage area, jetting, process circuits.
