Wear of mining shovel components: Current situation and analysis

The article presents basic results of the analysis accomplished by the authors to understand the current situation in wear control of mining equipment surfaces and components, in particular, implements and buckets of of mining shovels. The authors have found that wear control, including accurate inventory taking and protection of mining equipment is yet a burning and increasingly critical issue. This problem is connected with traditional factors of the mining industry, as well as with the enforced usage of shovels with nearly or totally exhausted life, without any supervision by manufacturers and in very difficult climatic and ground conditions. This specified problem has yet to be solved: both basic and applied research was abandoned in the late 1980s in Russia, while some specific issues were neglected even earlier. This problem lacks scientific attention in Russia, and the advanced foreign research also fails to cover all necessary partial and general provisions. Evidently, the critical problem of wear control necessitates intensified research by teams of academic scientists and practitioners representing manufacturers of mining shovels, new materials and lubricants. The key challenge of the day is to synthesize the research methodology to integrate topics on wear, soil adhesion, lubrication and shovel dynamics with regard to clearances.

Keywords: mining shovels, wear of shovel components, implements and buckers, wear control facilities.
