Specifics of the studies into mechanical properties of waste rocks

The evaluation of mechanical properties of waste rock dumps has been considered based on the comparative analysis of the available methods and equipment. The causes of insufficient operational reliability and efficiency of dump facilities are revealed, and the necessity of maximizing input capacity of dumps using the advanced techniques is shown. The downsides of lab-scale tests of rock refuse from waste dumps are demonstrated. The impossibility of lateral expansion of rocks under compression testing leads to distortion of the stress–strain behavior of real-life spoil heaps. The main drawback of the standard shear test machines is the small size of the test cells, which disables testing of rocks with large inclusions. As a result, it is concluded on the preference of the full-scale and bench tests of mineral waste. The equipment available for such tests is discussed. Based on the knowledge on the large-diameter triaxial compression machines to become available on the market, the recommendations are given on application of such devices in for studies into mechanical properties of mineral waste.
