A new approach to the interpretation of geodynamic monitoring data at underground gas storage facilities

The work is devoted to the development of a new approach to the interpretation of data obtained from the results of geodynamic monitoring at underground gas storage facilities. The aim of the proposed approach is to obtain the absolute values of deformation processes caused by the activation of fault zones, to predict hazardous situations and timely identify hazardous zones. The assessment of the existing approaches to the construction of “pulsation” and “evolutionary” graphs along the profile lines of the geodynamic test site shows the absence of the possibility of an unambiguous interpretation of the ongoing geodynamic processes. The main reason for this is the presence of a geomechanical component in the data obtained. As an alternative, an approach is proposed for the interpretation of seasonal “pulsation” and seasonal “evolutionary” plots, which with high reliability allow determining the presence of active fault zones and assessing the absolute values of deformation processes caused by them within the mining allotment of an underground gas storage. In addition, such a view on the interpretation of the data suggests that observations at geodynamic test sites of underground gas storage facilities can be reduced to once a year, provided that there are no previously recorded super-intense deformations in the spring periods of observations, as well as based on the results of current measurements in the autumn periods.

Keywords: underground gas storage, geodynamic testing ground, mine surveying and geodetic observations, “pulsation” graphs, “evolutionary graphs”, “seasonally pulsation” graphs, fault, subsidence.
