Justification of parameters of open pit mining using truck-and-shovel systems in the Extreme North

At present the mining industry in Russia has faced some adverse effects. One of the major problems is the impossibility of purchase and maintenance of foreign machinery. It is required to spur engineering and introduction of cutting, loading and hauling equipment of domestic manufacture. This study justifies parameters of an open pit mining system using modern domestic cutting, loading and hauling machines. Justification of such mining system parameters when cutting–loading equipment and motor vehicles are used should be performed for a unified truck-and-shovel system as engineering factors of cutting–loading equipment have influence on the highwall profile in open pits while engineering factors of dump trucks have influence on the spoil bank design. Efficient performance of a mine depends on the trouble-free operation of the truck-and-shovel system. Furthermore, the mine performance greatly depends on the complexity of a mineral deposit being mined. In terms of a structurally complex deposit being mined by the deep-level open pit mining method in the Arctic Zone (Murmansk Region), the rational truck-and-shovel operation flow chart was determined. The loading and hauling circuit parameters were validated, which enabled fuller extraction of ore from the deepest levels in the open pit. Owing to the shortened length of the ramp road, the haulage distance and the hauling time of the dump trucks were reduced, which led to the increment in the net profit of the mine.
