Substantiation of geotechnology for complex-morphology mineral deposits: A case-study of the Akzhal Mine

The article discusses the mining industry objective connected with the scientific and technical substantiation of an optimized geotechnology for underground mining of mineral deposits of complex morphology with regard to geological and structural peculiarities, different formations, as well as geological and geotechnical conditions as a case-study of the Akzhal deposit, which is a typical deposit with the complex morphology in Kazakhstan. The integrated research included a set of analytical techniques, review and generalization of the domestic and foreign experience in the selected research area, discussion of underground mining approaches to deep-seated and morphologically complex ore bodies, consolidation of transactions making a methodological framework for the optimization of underground ore mining, exploration of factors that influence selection of a mining system by geotechnical and economic criteria, justification of a method of reasonable selection of a geotechnology and its parameters for morphologically complex ore deposits, as well as identification of critical issues of science and technology. The necessary geomechanical parameters are calculated, and the feasibility study of the recommended mining system is carried out. During the research, the recommended mining systems were validated in accordance with the classification of ore bodies by thickness and dip angle, and the concept was developed for the justification of a selected underground geotechnology for mining ore bodies of complex occurrence towards enhanced efficiency and risk reduction of mining operations at mineral deposits of complex morphology.
