Justification of reduction in air requirement in ventilation of coal roadways with running diesel engines

Diesel-driven equipment is operated in all mines. Self-propelled diesel transport is used in coal mines to ease the bull work of personnel, namely, in transportation of people and materials, in roof support installation, or in fueling and maintenance of equipment, which allows speeding of heading operations. When diesel engines are run in coal mines, extra fresh air is required to dilute exhaust after fuel combustion in the engines. In Russia the fresh air supply standard in mines is 5 m3/min per 1 horsepower of internal combustion engine. Modeling of exhaust propagation during operation of diesel-hydraulic locomotives shows that this standard is overestimated and can be reduced down to 3.6 m3/min per 1 horsepower. With bio-additives introduced into diesel fuel, amount of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides is decreased by more than 20% as compared with the standard hydrotreated fuel, which justifies potentially higher reduction in fresh air feed for exhaust dilution.

Keywords: coal mines, diesel-hydraulic locomotives, ventilation, air flow rate, bio-additives, diesel fuel, exhaust, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides.
