Cutback angles for slope flattening during rehabilitation of degraded landscape due to open pit mining in friable sediments

A vast landscape is degraded due to mineral mining in friable sediments. The impact exerted by mining in friable sediments on the land resources is assessed. The structural analysis of land disturbed by placer mining and by quarries of building materials is performed. The main trend in such land reclamation is identified. There are no well-defined requirements for landscape rehabilitation during environmental reclamation, including flattening of manmade relief. It is necessary to develop standards for cutback angles for slope flattening during rehabilitation of degraded landscape. Brief information on the reclamation objects under study is given. The field test procedure and the outcome of statistical processing of placer mining reports are presented. The work content, haulage distances, collateral disturbed land and rehabilitation costs are related with the cutback angles accepted for slope flattening in degraded landscape, and with the pit depths. For the analogous manmade relief in East Siberia, the dependences of the density of disturbed land self-filling with vegetation and the surface slopes are found. From the comparison of the relations and dependences, the range of cutback angles is proposed for the degraded landscape flattening, including with allowance for pit void depths and dump heights.

Keywords: mining in friable sediments, disturbed land, environmental reclamation, reclamation requirement, surface flattening, rehabilitation work content and cost, surface self-filling with vegetation.
