Assessment of impact of induced stress fields on stress–strain behavior of underground structures

A new approach is proposed for the design of underground structures arranged in rock mass which experiences alteration of the stress–strain behavior as a result of induced effects. Assessment of the load-bearing capacity of such structures includes novel analytical solutions of some plane problems of elasticity for a semi-infinite medium with a weakening in the form of a reinforced circular hole, under the action of stresses induced by different factors, in particular, construction of close-spaced surface and underground structures. The methods of solving the mentioned problems use the integrated Kolosov–Muskhelishvili potentials and the apparatus of extension of functions, which are regular in the lower half-plane, through an infinite straight-line boundary, to the upper half-plane, as well as the properties of the Laurent series and Cauchy’s type integrals. The proposed approach is implemented as a software program. The proposed approach was applied to the stress–strain assessment of a subway train tunnel driven in the vicinity of buried pillars of a crossover belonging to the Western High-Speed Diameter in the city of Saint-Petersburg. The computer-aided modeling results show that the excessive stress fields are induced by the manmade factors and can lead to an increase of the maximal compressive stresses in the tunnel lining to 30%. The conclusion is proved by the interpreted readings of 32 sensors set in two control cross-sections of the tunnel lining.
