The experience of using coal washing rejects in reclamation of disturbed lands

The studies into disturbed land reclamation using rejects of coal washing are presented together with estimation of ecological state of soil. Disturbed land reclamation used flattening of underlying surface and placement of root layer 30–50 cm thick made of rich soil and potentially rich soil. The substrate was coal washing rejects as a mixture of coarse enclosing rocks (sandstone, mud stone and silt stone). The research determined the main agrophysical and agrochemical properties of the artificial soil with coal washing rejects on disturbed lands. Reclaimed soil features higher density due to the soil formation technology: over-compaction occurs in flattening with heavy machines at the stage of geotechnical reclamation. The test substrates have pH in the range from 8.00 to 10.00, which is reflective of a strongly alkaline reaction of soil solution. The highest pH values from 9.22 to 10.09 are typical of underlying layers composed of enclosing rocks after coal preparation. The content of organic matters depends on the used materials in case of the root layer and on the quantity of free carbon in enclosing rocks in case of the substrate layer. The ecological evaluation shows that reclamation of disturbed lands using an underlayer of coal washing rejects and a root layer fill allows formation of stable vegetation cover on post-reclamation site and enables environmentally sound use of coal washing rejects for land reclamation.
