Features of design and work method of mining module at coal deposits in the Russian Arctic

For the development of the industrial and social potential of the Russian Arctic, the issues connected with efficient production and delivery of combustible minerals are of strategic importance. The Pechora Coal Basin holds considerable resources of bituminous coal, but only two local deposits are being operated at the present time. The best part of the Vorkuta deposit has been extracted already, while the sites being now introduced in operation at the Vorgashor deposit contain many geological faults assessed as impassable. Mining of such sites will involve heavy losses of useful mineral in pillars near the geological faults and due to inefficient arrangement of extraction panels because of the specifics of extension of the geological faults. For mining such areas of a mine field, it is proposed to replace a longwall mining system of a classical configuration by a modular facility with stationary cutting heads. The article presents the analysis of geological and geotechnical conditions in Vorgashor Mine. The method of mineral cutting using modular facilities, which ensures a higher mining efficiency as compared with longwall shearers is discussed.

Keywords: longwall mining systems, modular facilities, cutting head, difficult conditions, geological faulting, longwall mining, Pechora Basin, Arctic Zone.
