Legal regime of mineral exploration and mining in the Chukchi sea

This article, in the context of the international law, reviews the legislative control effective in the Russian Federation and in the United States in the field of mineral exploration and mining in the Chukchi Sea. The legislation of the Russian Federation on oil and gas exploration and production in the Chukchi Sea, as well as the legislation of the Unite States on mineral exploration and mining in the Chukchi Sea are scrutinized with a special emphasis placed on the change in the policy orientation in connection with the presidency of Donald Trump, and on the similar and different points of such legislative control in these countries. In view of the increasing attention paid to the Arctic region, governments show a growing concern for the neat regulation of activities in the region both on the international and national scale. The potential future expansion of economic activities in the promising region of Arctic (in particular, in the Chukchi Sea which is the marginal sea in the Arctic Ocean and possesses considerable resources of hydrocarbons) owing to deglaciation dictates legislative control over such efforts by the Arctic States, namely, Russian Federation and the United States as the coastal states of the Chukchi Sea.
