Principle of environmental and economic balance in water management at a large company

Authors: Vurdova N. G.

Sustainable development is becoming the most critical element of strategic planning in industry in view of the expanding concern shown by state and society towards environmental issues. To meet the challenges, industrial companies are adapting production to principles of ecological sustainability. One of the promising approaches to environmental mitigation is implementation of closed and low-waste water systems in water management. Such systems help minimize volumes of effluents and pollutant emission. Waste water treatment customary involves high capital and operating inputs, and water circulation allows the investment optimization. Standards for water purity are lower in closed cycles than in waste water disposal in natural water bodies, which decreases expenses connected with water treatment. These technologies create a basis for the sustainable development, and ensure balance of production and nature conservation. This research aims to develop low-waste water circulation technologies and includes two key areas: maturing of innovative methods in waste water treatment and improvement of feasibility study in design of waste water treatment facilities. The investment analysis is performed as a case-study of modernization of sewage treatment facilities at a large company. The environmental and economic efficiency of the activity is confirmed.

Keywords: sustainable development of company, investment project, closed water circulation systems, feasibility study, environmental and economic balance, ecological risks, sewage treatment facilities.
