Spatial method for assessing the stability of reference geodetic networks used to monitor deformations of structures and ground surface

The article discusses methods for assessing the stability of geodetic reference networks when observing horizontal and vertical deformations of structures and ground surface. It is noted that the results of geodetic observations at geodetic reference network points using modern methods (linear-angular, satellite, photogrammetric measurements) are spatial coordinates and root mean square errors of their determination, which are used to assess the stability of geodetic reference network points for further geodetic observations of deformations. At the same time, it is common practice in the geodetic community to perform separate assessments of geodetic reference network stability in horizontal and vertical spaces, which requires additional steps to prepare the initial data, complicates the calculation process, and in some cases is not effective. A method for assessing geodetic reference network stability in spatial is proposed, based on the approximation of plan coordinates and heights of points by a plane and the analysis of its characteristic elements. A comparison of the results of its application with classical methods of separate stability assessment is performed using the example of geodetic reference networks with various types of deformations. Recommendations are given on the number of reference points in the network depending on the accuracy class of deformation observations. The proposed method for assessing geodetic reference network stability in spatial showed results comparable to those of separate stability assessment methods with less computation. The advantages of the proposed method are the ability to determine the instability of geodetic reference networks with a small number of reference points, as well as the ability to determine unstable points in cases where 50% or more of the reference points have lost stability.
