Increasing number of drill bits using braze and wedge soldering engagement

The article demonstrates the way of solving the problem connected with replacement of drill bits through the use of thermal and mechanical engagement methods and their combinations. Such engagement contains a wedge, which greatly reduces the cutting area per bit in drilling, i.e. the number of drill bits is small. Aimed to enhance efficiency of drilling, it is necessary to try to attempt to increase the number of drill bits without the loss in their strength and dismountability. To this effect, based on the strength analysis of tool materials under conditions of clamp, it is decided to be feasible to diminish geometrical dimensions of wedges in wedge engagements in drill bits. It is proposed to make paired counter wedges of stronger three-layer braze alloy TP-1M and to use them to fasten bits in the required position in the housing by soldering. This enables elimination of clamp wedges replaced by extra bits, which enlarges the bottomhole attack zone of drill bits. The tests show that the engagement strength of the braze and wedge soldering in the housing with side wall is equal to the engagement strength of welding wedge engagement, while feasibility of radial notch along the solder seam allows replacement or rearrangement of bits with subsequent re-soldering without additional tooling.
