Immediacy of improved management of auxiliary equipment operation in coal mines

In the past two decades, Russian coal mines have achieved substantial results in improvement of productive capacity of truck-and-shovel systems. For example, at the Chernogorsk Open Pit Mine being a typical domestic coal mine in terms of capacity, types of equipment in operation and manpower, as a result of implementation of a management- and process-oriented action plan in 2000 to 2018, the productivity of the truck-and-shovel system increased 1.9 times. Since 2019, a tendency towards a decrease or stagnation of this criterion started at that mine as at the other mining plants. Under the circumstances of recession, in the first quarter of 2025, relative to 2024, the percentage of unprofitable coal mines in Russia increased 1.7 times and reached 53%. This factor emphasized the need to find and utilize industrial resources to improve productivity and efficiency of truck-and-shovel systems. One of the most underestimated resources is the improvement of management over operation of auxiliary equipment (bulldozers, power graders, flushers and sprinkler, etc.). Such management is aimed at creation of favorable conditions for operation of truck-and-shovel systems. At the present time, management and professionals at coal mines hold this type of equipment as second-rate, which shows up as poor tracking of operation of auxiliary equipment and, consequently, as impossibility of correct appraisal and control of the equipment functioning. The article describes the revealed opportunities to enhance efficiency of operation of truck-and-shovel systems on the basis of the improved management of auxiliary equipment performance at the Chernogorsk Open Pit Mine.
